One of the great pleasures of traveling is documenting the things we encounter. Not only do we accumulate a collection of paintings and sketches that become lasting memories of where we have been and what we have seen, but we also tend to observe much more by stopping and painting.

With the high price of travel watercolor sets I came up with the idea of using an old eyeshadow box. I removed the 8 color pans and after a good washing refilled with my good watercolors from the tube. It works a treat, just need a saucer or paper plate to mix colors. Annabelle
Hi Annabelle,
Great idea, thanks for sharing it.
thanks, John, for your practical and inspiring tips. It is so easy to get bogged down with excess materials. I use John Muir Laws tip of cutting the foot off of a gym sock and keeping the ribbed part slipped over my wrist for blotting the brush.
Thanks Amy,
That sounds like a great idea. Much easier to carry than a hand towel!

Hi John
I’m doing some extended France vacation soon with painting in mind. Having read your travel tips the burnt sienna and indigo tip is of interest. Which one of your pay for video lessons would be most appropriate for this two colour plus white method?
Thanks
Tim
Hi Tim
I haven’t done a video project on two color limited palette yet, but plan to in the near future.
This article on my website might help though.
